Proper Workplace Ergonomics

Importance of Proper Workplace Ergonomics

Regardless of the kind of job you have, it’s important that maintain your health while doing the work. For instance, if your job consists of sitting at a desk staring at a computer for eight hours a day, you are at risk of stress injuries, such as repetitive stress on your neck, back, and joints. Ergonomics helps to prevent a work injury by using equipment that relieves stress on your body. At the same time, reduce the risk of an injury. Here are a few benefits that come with having proper workplace ergonomics in Reston.

Benefits of Proper Workplace Ergonomics

It’s important to keep in mind that what is comfortable for one person may not be comfortable for another, so for optimum benefits, proper ergonomics should fit you. Poor ergonomics, such as using a chair that is too high or too low, not having wrist support for repetitive tasks or placing feet on a hard surface for long periods of time. Common work-related medical problems often include headaches, migraines, carpal tunnel, rotator cuff injury, stiff neck and back injuries. Some ways you can benefit from proper workplace ergonomics include:

  • Reduced back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders
  • Less risk of stress injuries to joints
  • Higher production
  • Lower sick days as a result of a decrease in work injuries

There are a number of quick and easy ways you can make your workplace more ergonomic, such as routinely checking your posture, positioning the keyboard and mouse elevated so your elbows remain at your side, which prevents straining your muscles and relieves repetitive stress discomfort. One of the most important things to evaluate is your chair. An ergonomic chair allows you to sit in a natural position, allowing your feet to be flat on the floor and no space between your back and the chair. If you do experience a work injury, visiting your chiropractor can help relieve your discomfort and the chiropractor can discuss ergonomic recommendations with you.
