Do You Have Tech Neck?
Adults, teens, even children often bend their necks to look down at their phones, laptops, and other devices. If you think that won’t affect your body, think again! Our chiropractor in Reston, VA at Perron Chiropractic can help with tech neck issues caused by technology usage.
What is Tech Neck?
Tech neck is neck pain caused by lowering your head while using technology. Every time you bend your head forward to look at a device, you are putting extra weight strain on your neck muscles. Our heads weigh between 10 and 12 pounds, but that can compound to up to 49 pounds when tilted at a 45-degree angle.
This additional weight causes pain and stiffness in your neck, shoulders, arms, and back. You may even experience numbness in your extremities, balance issues, and jaw pain. Tech neck can result in cervical spine instability, which can lead to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). If you are experiencing IBS symptoms, a regular physician may not consider tech neck as a cause, but our chiropractor will.
The good news is tech neck can be reversed. Our chiropractors will talk to you about your day-to-day habits in both your work and home environment. A personally developed two-part plan may start with realigning your spine through gentle adjustments. This may also include use of the Activator Method to relieve neck pain.
Once the damage to your spine has been corrected, the second part of the plan may include receiving advice on keeping your spine aligned to avoid issues in the future. Our chiropractor may suggest simple exercises to strengthen your muscles and massage to keep the muscles loose. Finally, lifestyle changes like purchasing a phone holder to keep your eyes level may be suggested.
